Intro
🇧🇷 You may already know some phrases in Portuguese.
🎵”AI, SE EU TE PEGO, AI, AI, SE EU TE PEGO!” (= “Oh, if I could make you mine, oh, oh, if I could make you mine!”): “Ai, se eu te pego” (Michel Teló) (rough translation)
🎶”CHORANDO SE FOI QUEM UM DIA SÓ ME FEZ CHORAR” (= “The one that Only made me cry one day went away crying himself”) – “Chorando se foi (Lambada)” (Kaoma)
🎼“OLHA, QUE COISA MAIS LINDA, MAIS CHEIA DE GRAÇA!” (=”Look, such a beautiful, graceful thing”) – “Garota de Ipanema” – Tom Jobim
😎Do you recognize these songs? Then you are already one step closer to learning the beautiful Portuguese language!
🎉 It is likely that you have already traveled to Brazil and you were able to get by with a little “survival Portuguese”…
❤…So, the language captivated you and you were left wanting more.
🔥I am very happy because you have come to the right place to satisfy your curiosity about Portuguese!
In addition, Brazilian Portuguese sounds fun, relaxed, joyful! If you don’t believe me, listen to these songs. Just pay attention to the melody!
Can you guess what each song is about without understanding the lyrics? Take the quiz!
This song is about...
This is a song by a woman who has been betrayed and wishes all the harm to the lover who fooled her. Despite the upbeat rhythm, it's a bitter song about revenge!
This song is about...
This song is about peace of mind and the will to live, with phrases that are so nice to hear like “You make me crazy, but you just won't make me crazy because I am already crazy, I am already!” (““Você me deixa doído, mas só não me deixará doido porque isso sou, isso já sou!”).
This song is about...
The song is about having a callus on your foot. This is how we Brazilians are, who find humor even in the most banal things in life.
This song is about...
The song is about a man whose lover abandoned him and goes to make "MACUMBA" (black magic) for his lover to come back.
😂😂😂No kidding: the following songs are really about these topics:
- Being a stutterer and not being able to say romantic words to the beloved person because of the stutter.
- Drinking too much and saying strange words.
- A rainy day.
- A man who wants to be with a woman because of her money.
- Eating cassava flour dish (“FAROFA”).
- Being single and kissing many women. The joys of being single and ready to mingle is a very frequent subject in current Brazilian music, this song is just an example.
- Coming home drunk and apologize to the wife.
💙 This is a small sample so you can get a taste of Brazilian culture! We can happily talk about any topic – and Portuguese is the language we use to do that.

Who is the free online Portuguese mini-course for?
The curse is aimed at any beginner who wants to discover Portuguese in a dynamic and pleasant way.
You do not need to be a native English speaker to take the course. Having some fluency in the language will suffice.
- If you do not have previous knowledge of Portuguese, this course will give you a head start.
- If you have already learned a little Portuguese, the course will jog your memory. You will learn new things, too, for sure!
I use English as a support language in the mini-course with a didactic purpose:
- You will learn faster and without the risk of misunderstandings if I make explanations in a language that you already know, and if the vocabulary is explained in that language.
🤿If you want an even deeper immersion in Portuguese, I also have videos on my YouTube channel where I teach exclusively in Portuguese (with Portuguese and English subtitles).
You have here a playlist where all the videos have subtitles in Portuguese and English to facilitate your learning.
🔔You will find more playlists to learn Portuguese with subtitles on my YouTube channel. Subscribe!

How can I take lessons with the online self-study course?
🐤You will learn with total independence. I will walk you through each lesson with my explanations, but you work with the material the way it suits you better.
- The only requirement is that, to obtain your certificate, you must have passed all the quizzes.
- But you choose when to take the quizzes. You can repeat the lessons and quizzes if you want.
⏩The course is progressive. What you learn in one lesson will help you understand better the next one. It is not convenient to skip lessons.
🎬Video lessons are the backbone of the course. In them I will explain the information that appears in the PDF of each lesson.
- 💎Tip: even if you already know the topic of the lesson, do not skip the video. It will not take you long to watch it, and all the information in it is relevant.
You decide how to use the material available.
- 🎧For example, if you do not like listening to vocabulary audios, you do not have to. I say all the words in the corresponding video. You can also read those words in the vocabulary PDF or practice with the flashcards.
- 📱With Quizlet’s free mobile app, you can practice vocabulary anywhere, whenever you have some “down time” – and with that, your day will be more productive!
Learning a language encompasses four skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing. You will have opportunities to practice those skills with the material.
🎉The digital revolution allows you to study whenever it suits you, with varied, multimedia material, so that you have plenty of stimuli to learn.
- 💡The diversity of stimuli is a very important factor for your learning success.
- 💡Another essential factor is that the study material is systematic and coherent.
✅I will teach you more secrets and tricks to boost your Portuguese skills later on this post.
What is the difference between the mini-course and a language app?
Apps offer you interactive tools to learn. Apps can help you, for example, memorize words and phrases.
🦜However, learning a language does not consist of plain repetition. If we would just repeat, mechanically, words that we pick up here and there, we would be like parrots.
💬A parrot can say phrases, but it does not understand if you talk to it. A parrot does not understand what it was taught to say, either. A parrot is unable to improvise and to speak creatively. A parrot says “Polly want a cracker” and not much else.
Well, if it is a Brazilian parrot, it will say “LORO QUER BISCOITO” (“parrot want a cookie”), but you get what I mean.
- If one reduces language learning to memorizing a repertoire, one would be like an actor who depends on a script. If he goes blank, he cannot act.
- In the case of a language learner who only masters a bunch of phrases, he cannot interact with natives in everyday situations.
🧠The human brain is inquisitive. The brain needs reasoning, explanations. You must understand concepts to turn knowledge into practice.
- In my YouTube channel and in the blog, although I teach you useful phrases for communication, I explain them to you.
- I do not just throw huge vocabulary lists, nor do I expect you to memorize them without having understood them.
- I create this type of material so you have more examples and resources to communicate in Portuguese, having understood the basis of Portuguese with the courses I offer.
With apps, you may have questions that the app will not answer.
- The app will not explain the structure of the language, its internal logic, because only a good teacher (in a real class or on a video-recorded lesson) can transmit this knowledge to you.
- I have a lot of experience teaching and I know what are the questions that may arise. I answer your questions even before you are aware of them!
🦹 The ability to anticipate questions is not an innate “superpower” I have. It was developed by me to make your learning process more effective. It is the consequence of knowing the language and having years of teaching practice.
👍To be clear: questions are part of learning. Having doubts is healthy and positive. It is a sign that you are a proactive student.
😵However, there are teachers and methods that manage to raise more doubts than certainties among their students. That happens because the explanations are insufficient or unclear.
- Back in my university years and during foreign languages courses, I had some professors and teachers who refused to answer questions from students.
- They claimed that questions were a nuisance, even a lack of respect for the instructor’s authority.
- I imagine those teachers did not want to be in an awkward situation if the student asked a question that they could not answer… Or maybe the questions threw them off, making them lose concentration.
However, if the instructor masters the subject he/she teaches, there are no annoying interruptions. Students’ questions should serve as a stimulus to the teacher. If the students do not understand a topic, it is most likely that the teacher has not been able to explain him/herself well.
😳But, unfortunately, there are arrogant teachers who are convinced that their students should take the blame. I apologize on behalf of my colleagues, if you as a student have gone through that kind of experience.
- Good teachers are like boy scouts: always prepared. Even when they improvise, they know what they are doing.
- In addition, teachers who master the language of their students have greater empathy because they know where the students may stumble and helps the students to avoid mistakes.
That is why it is so important that, when you start studying Portuguese, the teacher knows your language, or a language spoken by both, teacher, and student.
- I am aware of the specific difficulties that English speakers like you find when learning Portuguese. I know what aspects of Portuguese are hard for you and I adapt to facilitate your learning.
🤗In the case of my video lessons, you will see that your doubts will be clarified because I explain everything that – from experience – I know you want to know.
- Of course, some doubts may arise during the mini-course. But they are likely to be doubts regarding other aspects of the language. They probably will not be questions about the specific content of the course.
I explain the course content clearly and concisely, visually and with examples.
- It is even possible that you do not have any doubts at all during the course. This will be because I already anticipated your inquiries and included them in my explanations, tackling an issue even before it came up.
- 😉I invite you to check it out by signing up for free in the mini-course.
Apps are so successful because they are fun. Entertainment is valuable, for sure. Enjoyment should be part of learning, but it should not be the only thing on which students base their learning.
Entertainment is not a synonym of learning success. It helps you make progress in your study, but if the maximum gratification we find in a learning resource is amusement, instead of learning per se, we will quit that resource to invest our time in another activity that delivers sheer entertainment.
- 💎Tip: to avoid losing motivation when learning a language, we must be aware of our daily progress. We must ask ourselves: “Am I learning something that I can apply to my daily life right now? Or am I just hanging out, doing something that does not add much real value, besides entertainment?”
- It is important that, especially in your early days learning Portuguese, you are exposed to input that enables everyday communication – immediately. That is what will give you the feeling of moving forward.
Language is a purely human thing. Technology can support you in learning.
- However, if you do not have the guidance of a real, empathetic, experienced teacher who – online or face-to-face – understands your mental processes, you will not understand how the language works.
😮And when you understand it…
- You can speak it in a natural, effortless manner.
- You can speak it without mentally translating the words into your native language.
✏Despite living in the digital age, we still need some traditional aspects of a language lesson – theory, exercises – to understand how the language works and how to use it autonomously and spontaneously.
With the mini-course, I provide you with:
- the aspects of a traditional language class that have been proven effective since languages are taught
- the best advantages of online teaching: flexibility and independence
🦉In short: a language app can be an asset when you learn a language, but you can hardly learn with an app alone, especially if you are an absolute beginner.

The only drawback of the course
The mini-course offers opportunities for you to practice your speaking and writing skills in Portuguese.
Online courses have many advantages, but nothing in this world is free of drawbacks.
And I am very honest telling you that, unfortunately, I cannot correct you when you make a mistake.
💎Tip: one way to neutralize this drawback would be for you to have a native friend to help you improve your speaking/writing skills in Portuguese.
💎Tip: you can find people available for language exchange (tandem) on this website.
💎Tip: If you are looking for groups that meet regularly to practice languages, you have many options on this website. More platforms for language exchange:
💎Tip: sign up for a Portuguese student’s group on Facebook or another social network because there are always native speakers offering free help to students, for example through chats on WhatsApp or Telegram.
❗❗❗But do not forget: the fact that a person speaks a language does not qualify him/her to teach it. Your language exchange partner may not be able to answer your questions the way a trained professional would. That is why you have the course: to have a qualified teacher guiding you in the learning process. The rest is mostly practice.
😉Now I shall nuance the drawback of the course (the lack of feedback).
I have many years of experience teaching face-to-face. The courses I liked the most were those of beginners. Why?
🤯Because beginners have no previous experience with the language, and therefore, when exposed to the right stimuli, they make few mistakes… Or no mistakes at all!
- 😬The problem is when the student does not have an adequate system to start studying the language.
❗If the students have not been exposed to a coherent teaching system tailored to their needs early in their process, they may make mistakes. These mistakes may not be serious, but they can be persistent.
- To avoid mistakes, all you have to do is to pay attention to the material of the mini-course.
- In it you will find everything you need to start speaking Portuguese correctly.
Will I feel lost in the course?
You will not feel lonely or disoriented during the course because:
- The material is neatly organized on the platform.
- I use English as a support language.
- You will see examples of all the theory I explain.
- You have exercises to put theory into practice. The answers are included, so that your learning is totally autonomous.
- You have the quiz of each lesson, so you can check if you learned the lesson’s main points.
- You have the index at the beginning of each lesson and the summary at the end of it. By taking a look at the bullet points, you could verify if you learned the key aspects of the material.
🙇 You may be concerned about learning something new at a time in your life when you consider yourself too old to learn.
- Do not worry! You are never too old to learn. Maybe you have gone a few (or many) years without attending a regular course. But I am sure you did not stop learning!
- Even if we have a routine, we are not stuck! Every day bestows countless learning opportunities on us, and we may not be aware of that. This is why we do not take advantage of those opportunities.
🤸 Learning is a healthy habit, like exercising. Those who exercise regularly get less tired than those who lead a sedentary life. The same happens with the habit of learning.
- You just need motivation, so you can abandon that “mental sedentarism” that we have when we are not actively learning a new skill.
- Of course, the first moments will be a little challenging. But the more you learn, the easier it will be for you to keep on learning.
- And the more languages you speak, the easier it will be for you to learn new languages.**
Every journey starts with the first step, says the Chinese proverb. The sooner you get moving, the sooner you will notice your progress.
How can I speak Portuguese without having to translate the words in my head?
🎯Speaking a language properly is not about translating word by word what you would say in your mother tongue.
- 🌅With the mini-course, I will guide you in such a way that you can immerse yourself in Portuguese without feeling the need to mentally translate the sentences.
- This process will be unconscious and effective, and it is a central part of my teaching methodology. Try it out, it is free!
🛠When I teach you Portuguese, I provide you with a set of tools in this language, so that you can interact with native speakers using only Portuguese.
- If all of us who speak a foreign language naturally were translating the words in our heads, we wouldn’t speak that fluently!
- In other words, there would always be a delay, like when you go to a conference and there is a person doing the simultaneous translation of what the keynote speaker says.
I studied Latin for a few years at university. I enjoyed it a lot, even though all the course work was doing translations. But, of course, Latin is a dead language! You cannot speak it with a community of native speakers. All the input you receive is written.
- With a living language, the use of translation is minimal.
When you see a new word for the first time in the mini-course, I translate it for you, of course.
- But once the word is part of your “mental thesaurus”, you automatically discard the translation.
💡This way, you can understand the phrases without transferring them to your mother tongue.
💡 You can also think in Portuguese using only that language, and build your sentences intuitively and correctly.
- Translation is unavoidable during learning… But only to a certain extent, for example, to learn vocabulary quickly.
But even with vocabulary, it is possible to learn with images. For this reason, you will be able to learn very well with the interactive cards of the mini-course. A picture is worth a thousand words.
🤯When you learn a language, you gain a brand-new brain. Your “Portuguese brain” will be connected to your “English brain”, of course.
- But your “Portuguese brain” will soon have autonomy. When you communicate in Portuguese, you will not need to “check out” your “English brain”. Your “Portuguese brain” gives you everything you need!
- You will use English as support when you are studying, but in real-life situations, your “Portuguese brain” will be the one that allows you to interact with native speakers.
Students who must translate what they want to say in their head before speaking have not been exposed to the right stimuli. If that is your case, don’t worry. The process is reversible! Sign up for the minicourse and you will see it.

I advise you to research how much an online course at another language school can cost.
You can be sure that no other language school offers you such a valuable free sample of its teaching style, no strings attached.
- I do offer you the mini-course, in which you will learn plenty of useful Portuguese words and structures, without feeling overwhelmed.
Each lesson of the full course costs you less than 10€… And it will cost you even less if you take advantage of the coupons.
🧐It is a very reasonable price for the intensity and the quality of practical information you will receive and the advantages of learning with full flexibility.

1 Portuguese lesson (in Euros, without discount) = ☕☕☕☕☕
⭐If you take the course, you will not be spending your money, as would happen if you had 5 coffees. You will be investing in your education, in your career, in yourself.
- It is not just your money that matters. Your time is crucial, as well! And the time and money you invest in learning Portuguese will give visible results in the short, medium and long term.
✨These results are:
- Material benefits: you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge and achieve ambitious goals in your academic and professional life.
- Personal benefits: you will invest in yourself, in learning something useful that you will find pleasurable.
Are you still not convinced? Read on.

What hacks can optimize my learning?
💎To learn well you must…
- Have quality material, systematic and varied. You already have this! 🍾
- Dedicate time and have a little patience.
- Define your goals and verify that you are reaching them.
- Enjoy acquiring a new skill and learning when you are concentrated and feel like doing it.
Let’s look at these and other factors that contribute to your success.
Side note: these tips are the result of my experience as a teacher, my experience as a student and academic studies on didactics and psychology.
Repetition
“Practice makes perfect”, right?
To learn any new skill, we must know the theory, but we can only master it through practice… And part of practicing means: repetition.
- We only retain information if we repeat it. Unless you have a photographic memory, you will have to see the same word several times to assimilate it.
💡But repetition does not mean monotony! As you know, variety is key to excellent results in learning a language.
💎My advice is: before you learn something new, go over what you have already learned, even if it is just a quick glance at the mini-course summaries.
- You can vary your review sessions: one day you refresh your vocabulary with the PDF; the next, you use the flashcards; the third, you listen to the audio; the fourth, you watch the corresponding part in the video of the lesson again…
- Repeat each word aloud or write it down in a notebook or a piece of paper. To assimilate the information, it is convenient that you repeat it (saying it aloud or writing it down).
Your motivation
Any person can achieve a goal if he/she puts his/her mind to it.
- Do you remember the French or Spanish classes in high school? Surely you did not learn much back then because it was mandatory. Perhaps you did not see the usefulness of that knowledge. Maybe your teacher was jaded, and his/her lack of enthusiasm for the language was contagious.
👉But now everything is different. You are in control: you decide to learn and you will do so when you have the right mindset.
- You will notice your progress instantly and thereby your motivation will grow exponentially.
Your organization
💎You must choose the right time to learn. You, I insist, are in the driver’s seat.
- For many people, an activity that requires some willpower, but is done voluntarily and with a benefit in mind – such as exercising or learning a language – should be part of a routine. Make it part of your schedule and define a place to study.
- However, if you are one of those people who do not thrive under pressure, take your lessons whenever you feel inspired. But sometimes you need an extra motivation boost.
- 🦥Therefore, I advise you, if you feel a little lazy, put on some music in Portuguese. That pleasant stimulus will help you find the desire to study.
Check out the power of music with this eclectic playlist I prepared for my dear students. You will surely find something that pleases you.
💎Tip: If you are having trouble concentrating, go outside and take a walk in the park or on the beach.
- Both the physical activity of walking and the color green stimulate us, science points out .
- Aristotle himself was adept at teaching his disciples as he walked. Give the Greek philosopher’ hack a try.
- And when you have found your inspiration, take advantage of the fact that you have access to the course from your smartphone and learn outdoors.
- Or you can keep walking while listening to the audios or the video lessons with your headphones.
Your commitment
Studying a language, especially at the beginning, demands a little bit of you.
- I seriously question the professionalism and honesty of teachers who promise that you can learn any language effortlessly, even in your sleep.
- Because one, before becoming a teacher, has been a student. And the teachers who remembers these past experiences teach better… They put themselves in the student’s shoes and remember that the study requires some dedication.
- 🧞 No one learns anything by snapping their fingers, and promising miracles is misleading advertising.
I am not saying that study should be a burdensome, stressful experience. Quite the opposite!
🏔Difficulties may arise, but I advise you to approach them as opportunities for growth.
🚩Several studies point out that one can only learn by being challenged. If you do not step out of your comfort zone, you do not learn.
💎Tip: You must find the balance. You should feel that you are overcoming obstacles, without exhaustion and without feeling swamped.
Without a little effort, there is also no sense of reward. The feeling of having achieved something on the merits of oneself is empowering.
- 💎Do not be discouraged. A new language is a new world. It will take you some time to get used to it. The more contact you have with the language, the sooner that feeling of “being out of place” will vanish.
- 💎The new language is full of unknown aspects that you can explore with full freedom. With an online course, no one will be testing you, no one will be judging you, or expecting anything from you.
Your perseverance
To truly learn, you must be consistent. I know it is not easy, because we all must deal with social engagements, various tasks, and unforeseen events.
🔝But if you consider Portuguese a priority, you will find time for it, and the right mindset to learn.
💎Identify the excuses you use not to start studying (tiredness, laziness, lack of time, other more urgent items in your to-do-list …). Only if you make that “diagnosis” will you be able to stand up to the tendency to self-sabotage that we all have.
- We never make excuses for not carrying out a pleasant activity. We must understand what excuses we make for not performing a rewarding activity, but that requires some effort, and thus stop justifying procrastination.
You have at least two alternatives:
- If you are disciplined, you can pose your course as a “challenge” and strive to finish the mini-course in a week, for example.
- But if you do not have that discipline or that goal, do not worry. You do not need to “force” yourself to study because, if you are motivated, the desire to learn will appear. If you tend to procrastination, here are some useful tips.
💎Dedicate some time each day to the course. Ten minutes a day will be enough to get you started.
- Spend 10 or 15 minutes each day learning. It is more productive than studying 20 or 30 minutes every other day.
🙆 You do not need to do a new lesson every day. But set aside a few minutes of your busy schedule for reviewing older lessons. Especially at the beginning of language learning it is necessary to be consistent.
- If at that initial stage the study is irregular, we easily forget the information.
That time is quality time that you are investing in yourself, in becoming a more resourceful, confident person.
💎Never forget the benefits of your learning. If you remember your goals and your gains (looking to the future), and you remember how much you have achieved so far (looking to the past), you will not give in to the tendency to procrastinate (in the present).
Your physical and mental wellbeing
A healthy lifestyle habits make us more effective people. It seems obvious, but having a balanced life has an impact on an overall well-being that improves the results of your intellectual efforts.
💎Sleep the hours you need, have meals that are as varied and as natural as possible, do some physical activity, drink enough water, keep up hobbies and nurture friendships.
💎Create a cozy learning environment.
- You must find yourself physically comfortable to enjoy your lessons. Pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, put on nice lighting, wear comfy clothes (sweatpants, yoga pants, or no pants at all!). Or go to a coffee shop or a library if you think you have distractions at home (and you feel like wearing pants😋).
Get more effective study sessions – digital and analog tricks
💎Schedule your learning sessions for your finest hour, for the time you feel more focused and loaded with energy. Do not try to learn new information if you feel worn out and have trouble concentrating.
- Find out if you are a morning person or the opposite (you can take the quiz) and set some time in that time to work with Portuguese.
- If you respect the rhythm of your body, you will achieve a better study quality.
💎Congratulate yourself on your achievements. Give yourself a treat after your daily study. You earned it!
- Eat a chocolate or drink a coffee. Lie on the couch to do nothing. Give yourself a minute of silly internet pastime for every minute of study. That way you will not feel remorse because your hobby is fully deserved.
- If one day you are feeling dispirited, indulge in something that you enjoy before studying as an incentive, and give yourself a reward after you have studied.
- If you have trouble concentrating, drink a glass of water. It may seem like an absurd trick, but it really works. Give it a try.
💎Set clear and realistic study goals.
- If you only have 10 minutes, do not start a new lesson. Use short periods for reviews or exercises.
- To start a new lesson, set aside 20 minutes to watch the video and repeat the parts you need to watch again.
💎Review what you learned each day before bed. Two minutes will suffice. That will give you a sense of having accomplished something that day and, in addition, you will help your brain during the night turn your short-term memory into long-term memory.
💎Write down in your calendar your study goals for the day. It will give you great satisfaction to be able to cross out that task when you have completed it.
Here I prepared an example of a calendar. You can download the image to print and fill in with your own weekly study goals.

You do not need much grammar for that: you can write your goals with the infinitive, and you will already be practicing Portuguese in a natural and useful way.
The vocabulary of study activities in Portuguese is the following:

ESCUTAR | to listen |
FALAR | to speak |
LER | to read |
ESCREVER | to write |
ANOTAR | to take notes |
VER O RESUMO | to see the summary |
CONSULTAR OS CARTÕES DE VOCABULÁRIO | to check out the vocabulary flashcards |
REVER O VOCABULÁRIO | to review the vocabulary |
FAZER OS EXERCÍCIOS | to do the exercises |
OUVIR O ÁUDIO | to listen to the audio |
VER O VÍDEO | to watch the video |
FAZER O TESTE | to take the quiz |
💎You can use that same weekly calendar as a diary, in which you write down what you accomplished every day in Portuguese.
💎Another use of the same calendar is to write down the words you want to learn during the week. When you are sure you have learned the word, you cross it out. Save used calendars you to review information after a few weeks.
💎Talk alone. Or, if you think that is crazy (it is not – talking is just talking to someone who surely listens to you 🤭), talk to your pet or your plants.
- Read the examples and exercises aloud. Thus, you will practice three skills at once: the ability to read, to listen and to speak.
- If you write your word lists yourself and create your own summaries, you will also be training your writing.
💎Explain what you learned to someone else. This way you will consolidate the information and do a good deed, because knowledge is a precious gift. Share what you know with someone who knows how to value it: it is something that will benefit both of you.
- In addition, we know that we have really understood something when we are able to transmit it to another person. If that person could assimilate what you taught him or her, it is that you master the topic.
💎Ask not to be disturbed when you are studying. Even if you are working with your notebook or phone screen, ignore or disable notifications during study time.
Tips: how to incorporate Portuguese into your day-to-day life – straightforwardly and for free!
💎Print the course PDFs or download them on your smarphone to have the material always at hand to make a quick review. If the material is accessible, you have no “excuse” not to study.
💎Take advantage of idle time (waiting for the bus or in the supermarket queue, for example) to take a look at the flashcards in the mobile application.
💎Change the settings of your phone (also of the apps and social media that you use) for Portuguese.
- It is a way to learn vocabulary without realizing you do, because when you touch the phone, your brain is often on “autopilot.”
- That vocabulary learning is unconscious and works.
💎Change the settings of your video games for Portuguese.
💎Pinterest can serve you for fashion and lifestyle trends – but in Portuguese! As, in addition to being a social network, it is a search engine by images, you can easily search in the foreign language. Just use the right keywords:
MODA | fashion |
PENTEADOS | hairstyles |
MAQUIAGEM | make-up |
UNHAS | nails |
RECEITAS | recipes |
(FAZER) EXERCÍCIO/ESPORTE | exercising/doing sports |
FITNESS | fitness |
DIETAS | diets |
DECORAÇÃO | decor |
CITAÇÕES | quotes |
CASAMENTOS | wedding |
NATAL | Christmas |
- You can also use Pinterest specifically to learn. Create your boards and save the pins that interest you and, thus, always have resources at hand to study whenever you want.
- Check out my account (@discenslearning), where I keep materials created by myself and by other professional teachers. I conscientiously choose that material and you can be sure that they are quality resources for your self-learning.
💎Use online resources.
✅YouTube channels.
GNT. This is not a channel for Portuguese learners, but it has amazing content. You will find videos of this channel of interviews and lifestyle. It is suitable for intermediate-level students, but it does not cost you anything to take a look, since the information is quite visual (cooking and decoration videos, for example) and it is a great way to do some immersion.
✅Websites / Blogs:
YesPortuguese. Brazilian Portuguese blog & YouTube channel.
Rio&Learn. Brazilian Portuguese blog.
StreetSmartBrazil. Brazilian Portuguese blog.
Fluentu. Portuguese learning blog with useful tips and resources.
Speak like a Brazilian. Dictionary of colloquial expressions.
✅Listening comprehension in Portuguese:
PortuguesePod101. On the YouTube channel, you will find free content to get more input.
Coffee Break Portuguese. Podcast with short and very useful episodes. You can listen to it on Spotify, too.
✅Online Portuguese exercises:
BaBaDum. The page will allow you to play and learn the language. Free.
PracticePortuguese. It is apaid service but they offer some free content. warning: it is European Portuguese.
💎Many students like to have little pieces of paper around the house on which they have written down relevant information (“cheat sheets”).
- You can put a piece of paper with the name of each object (stick one to your box of cereals where it says “OS CEREAIS”). And get creative!
- For example, you can put little pieces of paper in the bathroom mirror and review vocabulary or conjugations while brushing your teeth.
- You can put pieces of paper in the pockets of your jackets and coats to have Portuguese always at hand.
- Those pieces of paper can be written by you. Or you can print the vocabulary lists of the course to fit four slides on an A4 sheet. You cut each one out and use it as your “cheat sheet.”
💎Do not be afraid to make mistakes. In case of doubt, check out the course material, online dictionaries and translators.
💎A key to success – in Portuguese or any other project – is to share your progress with friends and family and people you think support you. Do it IRL and on social media.
- It is a way to reinforce your commitment, without putting yourself under pressure that could backfire.
- If your friends know you are studying Portuguese, they will accompany your progress, and you will want to share good news with them. That keeps you motivated.
- For that reason, I enabled the option for the student to share their progress in the mini-course on social networks.
Surround yourself with stimuli in Portuguese to learn passively
💎This way, you will be learning even if you do not consciously assimilate the content of the stimulus (that is, if you do not understand every single word that comes up). You will be training your hearing comprehension with hardly any effort.
💁 If you are one of those people who aim for understanding everything you hear or read, you should be a little more flexible.
- Keep in mind that deduction is part of any communication – even if we are communicating in our native tongue! This is what happens with non-verbal communication (gestures, tone of voice, facial expression…).
💪It is essential to learn proactively with regular study sessions, in which, yes, you must understand all the content consciously.
💁 But you should also spend time learning passively, that is, having contact with Portuguese in ways that are pleasant for you.
- If you are at ease, you assimilate the information better – even if you do it unconsciously. This is how you learn, without realizing that you are learning.
💎Apart from study time, add a few minutes to your day doing something totally idle, but that involves Portuguese.
📺It can be watching a series in Portuguese with English subtitles.
- If you fancy a challenge, put a series or movie that you have seen many times and watch it in Portuguese with Portuguese subtitles. Since you already know the plot (and even some lines by heart), you are assimilating Portuguese without being aware of it.
🎵Listening to music is also great, especially if you listen while reading the lyrics of the song. You do not need to understand the meaning of the lyrics. It is enough that you read the written words and pay attention to how they are pronounced.
- Spotify has many songs available with “subtitles”.
- When you already know a little more Portuguese, you can practice the language with songs on these websites:
💎Just listen to music. Let it play in the background. It is a great way to learn without being aware that you are learning and, at the same time, to do something pleasant.
🎼I created this very eclectic playlist for my students and I hope you enjoy it!
💎Create opportunities to listen to Portuguese in your daily life. For example:
- Find out if there are gatherings in your city for Brazilian dancing and music aficionados (samba, pagode, and forró are very popular), or if you can learn capoeira in your town. It is very likely that there are Brazilians and there will be opportunities to chat or, at least, to be in contact with the culture.
- Go to a Portuguese café or Brazilian restaurant (rodízio steakhouse), as it is possible that the waiters are native, and you can take the opportunity to order your food and chat about it in Portuguese.
🤵In this short video you will learn the basic phrases to order something at a bar or café. This is the video #16 of this list of short videos to learn useful phrases. You have more input with audios and quizzes available for free.
Eu queria tomar um café. | I would like to have a coffee. |
Um café, por favor. | A coffee, please. |
Para mim, um café com leite e sem açúcar. | For me, a coffee with milk and no sugar. |
Estou com sede. Eu peço um suco de laranja. | I am thirsty. I order an orange juice. |
Estou com fome. Peço um pedaço de bolo. | I am hungry. I order a piece of cake. |
A conta, por favor. | The check, please. |

Why is the mini-course available for free?
😱”You are out of your mind, why on Earth are you going to offer free of charge a course you have worked so hard to create?”
That question was asked to me by many people during the process of crafting my courses. Maybe you have asked it yourself, too.
Therefore, here I will explain what led me to create these courses so that you can see the transparency of my teaching method.
Many businesses offer testimonials from their customers as proof of their satisfaction. I do too, because I understand that those testimonials can help you decide to learn with me. You can watch one here:
I also offer you my testimonial, so that you understand why I am so proud of my work that I want to share it with the world.
For three years, I dedicated myself almost exclusively to creating the 8 mini-courses and the 8 complete A1 level courses that you will find on this website.
💜But these courses encompass much more than 3 years of work.
- The courses are the result of a lifetime speaking the languages I teach.
- The courses are the result of my positive experiences as a student. I enjoy participating in seminars for teachers, chatting with colleagues and learning languages for fun, observing what strategies work and how to apply them to improve my methodology.
- The online courses I offer you are also the result of my academic studies and my entire professional career dedicated to teaching.
I will tell you a couple of things about me here, since in the educational videos I teach the language, exclusively. I do not share my personal life in them because it has no relevance to your learning.
- But here it does because, when you get to know me, you will better understand what I can do to help you with Portuguese.
🤗My name is Alicia, I am Sagittarius, and my favorite food is strawberries. I have a pet bunny who loves it when I take him for a walk, holding him in my arms, and that random people call him “LINDO” (“handsome”) (because he is). He also enjoys meditating with me at the beach (he is a very sensitive and spiritual being).
I have been incredibly lucky to be raised in three languages. I grew up in Brazil, my mother is German, and my father is Spaniard. I studied until I was 18 years old at the Miguel de Cervantes Bilingual School in São Paulo, Brazil.
I studied the Licenciatura de Humanidades/Kulturwissenschaften, two master’s degrees in didactics and a doctorate in literature. I carried out these studies at the University of Alcalá (Madrid) and the Humboldt Universität (Berlin).
I moved to Berlin to study my last year of university. After that, I worked for many years as a teacher at the Volkshochschule in Berlin. In 2018 I moved to Mallorca to be closer to my family and to focus on the creation of digital content.
I have always been fascinated by communication and languages. I knew from a very young age that it made me happy to learn things and to transmit that knowledge. I am enormously grateful for the support I received and continue to receive from my family.
I am lucky for my circumstances and for your interest in learning a language with my help.
I do not ask you for anything in return for the content that I offer you for free.
👍But I appreciate that you react to the content I publish on the blog, on YouTube and on other social media (comments, “likes”, subscription to the channel, sharing the content with your friends).
🙌Your feedback helps me to be a better professional, and with that, the quality of what I offer you will increase. Thank you in advance for your support!
But, in addition, there is another factor that you probably do not know if you do not create content on the internet. I did not know that until recently either, and so I did not understand why digital content creators insisted so much that people “like” their content.
- When you react positively to the content I post on any digital media, you are giving proof that the content is relevant.
- Artificial intelligence identifies these signals as a quality indicator.
⚡That helps search engines give my content greater visibility. As that I reach a wider audience, I can afford to invest part of my time on creating FREE, VALUABLE content for you and for other learners.
Many people who upload content to the internet aim for money and fame, and some even achieve it.
- This is not my case. In my professional life, I am extroverted, but in my personal life, I am a very private person. I also do not have dreams of wealth and popularity. Otherwise, I would not have studied Philosophy and Arts (“Humanidades”).
I share my materials, so my teaching style is available for those who are curious and interested in learning.
I find my work itself rewarding and I know I am doing my bit because the digital revolution allows me to. Teachers of previous generations had no such luck.
- The desire to learn is a fantastic thing and teachers must help their students satisfy that thirst for knowledge
- The teacher feels fulfilled to see that the more the students learn, the more they want to learn.
Being a teacher is one of the most amazing jobs out there because we assist those who need help.
When you teach a language, you provide resources to your students so that they can solve problems and be open for new experiences.
- Us, teachers, are motivated because our students motivate us, and vice versa.
👏Knowing something useful and interesting and being able to teach it is a huge satisfaction that every passionate teacher knows very well.
That reward is what makes many teachers keep up their good work even if they could have other better-paying jobs that require less personal commitment than teaching.
For a passionate teacher, there are more important things than making money.
- If you think it is strange that a course of such quality is offered free of charge, I understand your surprise. We live in a world where the value of everything is reduced to money.
- Because of this materialistic world, we often believe that something will give great results just because it was pricey. And we believe that, if something is free, it will not be a worth much.
But the best things in the world are priceless and cannot be purchased. Learning is a fantastic thing, and it should be free and available for everyone.
Teachers, like any other professional, must be paid. But many of us are so enthusiastic about what we do, that we are willing to give up some of our skills, our energy and our time without asking for anything physical in return.
For me, money is not that important. More important for me is to do something I love, to know that I help my students… That my time and yours is being invested wisely.
I spent many years teaching face-to-face classes to groups and individuals. It was delightful to be in personal contact with them.
But – at the same time – I was frustrated because I could not work more than I did so I could help more students. My day only has 24 hours.
Then I realized that, by uploading my materials to the internet, the time it takes me to create that content “stretches”. I spend many hours creating a piece of content, but after publishing it, it is available to anyone who wants to access it – anytime, anywhere.
Besides that, as a teacher, I relish the feeling that I am not imposing anything on my students.
👐I offer you all the resources you need to learn coherently and methodically.
🤩I insist that you should study when you feel focused and receptive to new information to increase your productivity.
✳You only need willingness to study and to dedicate a little time each day to Portuguese.
- Let me explain. In my face-to-face classes, making my students at ease was one of my top priorities.
- I did my best to achieve this, but in group classes I had to follow a lesson plan and could not adapt to the wishes of each student.
👩🏫It is quite different in the online self-study course. You will feel as if it were a private class in which there is no schedule that you should stick to.
✌I leave the material organized for you and I give you the necessary and coherent explanations. And after that, everything is up to you!
You learn whenever you want and decide the intensity of your study sessions. It is the most flexible and effective form of study.
🌳To put a metaphor, the teacher who works online plants a tree that, whenever someone wants to take its fruit, they can get it.
- Online self-learning is a tree that never stops bearing fruit. When you want to taste the fruit, there you have it.
Every material I publish comprises the time I invested creating it, and the incalculable value of my knowledge and my experience with speaking and teaching languages.
- And there is also something else, something that is part of me, and that is my passion for teaching and my determination to do it better and better.
It is an honor and a great pleasure to be able to share that with you and with anyone who wants to benefit from my knowledge and my methodology.
- I am giving you all that value because I sincerely believe that you are worth it and because I trust that everything I teach is useful and will only bring you advantages.
Because I know that by publishing free materials and mini-courses, I am giving you a very powerful tool: the ability to communicate with more people.
🌉To use another metaphor, a language is a bridge. The more bridges you know, the more places you can reach, the more people you can get to know.
- A language, apart from having value in itself (as knowledge and as a practical skill), fulfills the purpose of increasing one’s resources and aptitudes.
- You can learn a language just for sheer pleasure. But even so, everything you learn is useful in your practical life.
🌎Learning opens our minds. It means discovering new realities and ways of understanding those new worlds.
You do not know how many opportunities you are missing right now by not sacrificing a little of your valuable time to learning a language.
👨 💼Think that there may be a better-paying job than your current one. A job in which you do something that you like more, and the only thing that keeps you away from that dream job is that you still cannot add “Portuguese” to your resumé.
👰Think that there are millions of lovely people that you could meet if you spoke their language and understood their culture. Think that maybe your soulmate only speaks Portuguese, and you cannot get to know this wonderful person because you do not speak a common language!
🏖Keep in mind that, if you speak Portuguese, you will enjoy your vacation even more. It is possible that in the touristy spots of the Portuguese-speaking countries English is spoken. Since you can order food in your language, that is enough for you not to starve… But you may want to be able to say much more in Portuguese than the phrase virtually any tourist knows: “una cerveza, por favor🍺”.
To have a deeper understanding of a culture you must know the language. This is how you will connect better with people and their way of thinking.
Do you understand my passion for languages and why I want to share my knowledge and methodology with you?
🔑Language is the key you need to open doors that you may not even imagine that they are so close to you, just waiting for you to open them.
Believe me, your life is going to change when you start speaking a new language.
🙊I am only able to communicate with you now because I speak English. If I did not know this language, I could not teach you Portuguese…
- …Moreover, I could not teach you Portuguese by understanding the difficulties you may encounter in that language when English “gets in the way”.
- That understanding of your difficulties as an English-speaker is an added value of my courses and materials.
🍀You want to learn and – merely for that – you deserve the opportunity to do so without having to pay for it.
🐇You could be spending the time you are investing on this blog post watching videos of adorable animals on the internet. I cannot “compete” for your attention if you want to watch videos of fluffy bunnies. Rabbits are heavenly creatures, and they also deserve to be given a little of your time.
(here I put a GIF as a thank you for your patience to continue reading this post)
Much of what we do during our leisure hours is to seek entertainment. It is necessary and healthy to do so. You should enjoy your spare time with things that cheer you up.
You could be using your leisure time with any pastime, but now you are giving me your attention and your time.
The best way to show you my gratitude for that gift of yours is to give you something in return: quality learning materials for which you do not have to pay a dime.
⌛On your part, you only need to dedicate time and have a desire to learn. And you can believe me when I tell you that your time will be very productive on the course.
⏰Every minute you dedicate to Portuguese you will be learning practical things and in such a pleasant way that, indeed, time will fly by.
If you still do not believe it, you can check it out right now.
